"Karl Gebhardt 1897-1948 was a German medical doctor; personal physician of Heinrich Himmler and one of the main coordinators and perpetrators of surgical experiments performed on inmates of the concentration camps at Ravensbrück and Auschwitz.
-----
In the SS Gebhardt rose to the rank of a Generalleutnant (Major General). Having ordered or executed them, he was directly responsible for numerous surgical experiments done on concentration camp inmates, in particular at the women's camp in Ravensbrück (which was close to Hohenlychen) and in Auschwitz.
During the war, he also acted for some time as the president of the German Red Cross. After the war, Gebhart stood trial in the Doctors' Trial together with 22 other Nazi doctors before a U.S. military tribunal where he was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity and sentenced to death on August 20 1947. He was hanged on June 2 1948, in Landsberg prison in Bavaria."
