- in starvation mode, your body will burn both muscles for protein (the only source of energy your brain can run on) AND fats (which is what the rest of the body runs on).
- the balance for body building is eating ALOT of protein so the brain can function but not eating ANY fat so the body is forced to use fatty reserves
The entire process:
- The body uses glucose (from your last meal) as its main metabolic fuel if it is available.
- After the glycogen reserve is used up, glucose can be obtained from the breakdown of fats.
- the glucose from these broken down fats can be used by the tissues and etc in the body, EXCEPT the brain which requires PROPER glucose.
- Thus, when fatty acids are being broken down for energy, they are used for the body. But all of the remaining actual glucose is made available for use by the brain.
- The problem is that the body requires 120g of glucose per day, which is a **** ton.
- The bodies "backup plan" involves using Ketone bodies [as in from ketogenic diets for the aware brah's] which are short-chain derivatives of fatty acids. These shorter molecules can be used by the brain as an alternative metabolic fuel.
- After a while the body begins to run out of ketones and MUST find a real protein source else where: thus muscle is burned for the brain even if you weigh 200000pounds and there is tons of fat remaining!
