TEHRAN, Iran -- The coronavirus outbreak disrupted Islamic worship in the Middle East as Saudi Arabia on Wednesday banned its citizens and other residents of the kingdom from performing the pilgrimage in Mecca, while Iran canceled Friday prayers in major cities.
The decisions in Riyadh and Tehran affected both Sunni and Shiite Muslims alike.
The Palestinian Authority suspended prayers in mosques and churches in the occupied West Bank to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, and the Hamas-led government of Gaza said all the enclave's border crossings would be shut for travel.https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/...233453162.html
The Palestinian Authority's Religious Affairs Ministry asked Palestinians to worship at home.
"In light of the Health Ministry's recommendation to minimize contact between people and to reduce gatherings as much as possible we call upon our Muslim people in Palestine to hold their prayers at home," a ministry statement said.
Gaza authorities said they web re closing Gaza's border crossings with Israel and Egypt for travel, excluding life-threatening cases that required medical treatment outside the enclave. Gatherings would be limited to 100 people and schools were to remain shut through March.

In other "social distancing" steps adopted by Damascus, which has not to date reported any case of the disease, weekly Friday prayers in mosques have been suspended as well as prayer gatherings.

Mosques and Islamic centers in Paterson, Teaneck, Paramus, South Brunswick, Union City and other parts of the state had announced the suspension of services, with many citing a New Jersey directive to cancel events with more than 250 people.
“Per the directive of Governor Murphy and after careful consideration and consultation with area imams and area leaders, including our Imam Chebli, ISCJ has decided to cancel all three juma prayers [Friday],” leaders of the Islamic Society of Central Jersey wrote in a statement. “The decision was made with full consideration for the health and safety for our entire community.”
