B.C. Climate News Nov. 15-21: Insurance industry describes latest extreme weather as 'wake-up call' on climate change |
'Couldn't have imagined it six months ago,' says Horgan, but scientists have been issuing climate warnings for decades
This week the dominant climate news was the atmospheric river that hit southern B.C. and the catastrophic flooding and deadly landslides, which scientists have linked to the climate crisis. The event caused at least four deaths, forced thousands of British Columbians to flee their homes, and stranded 275 people between two landslides.
The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned for years that wildfires, drought, severe weather, such as B.C.’s deadly heat dome in June, and flooding would become more frequent and more intense because of climate change.
…
Aaron Sutherland , vice-president of the bureau’s Pacific region, said while B.C. had been relatively spared the effects of previous extreme weather events compared to other provinces and countries, all that changed in 2021.
“We opened the year with some severe storms, had the heat dome, really devastating wildfires, and now we’ve had this,” he said referring to the recent rainstorm, flooding and mudslides.
“It should be a real wake-up call that climate change isn’t some future threat. It is a clear and present danger that’s increasingly impacting all of us today.”
