A HAND-LIKE PULSAR
At the centre of this image is a small, dense and powerful pulsar known as PSR B1509-58, or B1509 for short. It is only about 19 km in diameter (12 miles), yet it is responsible for this X-ray nebula that spans 150 light years. The pulsar is a neutron star that is spinning rapidly, ejecting energy into the surrounding space and creating interesting structures like the one in this image.
This image shows the lowest energy X-rays that Chandra detects in red, with the medium range energy as green and the most energetic X-rays in blue. B1509 is thought to be about 1700 years old as measured by events observable from Earth and is about 17,000 light years distant within the constellation Circinus.
Neutron stars like B1509 are created after massive stars exhaust their supply of fuel and collapse. B1509 spins almost 7 times each second and has an intense magnetic field at its surface estimated to be 15 trillion times stronger than the Earth's magnetic field.
This rapid rotation and strong magnetic field make B1509 one of the most powerful electromagnetic generators in our galaxy, driving an energetic wind of electrons and ions away from the neutron star. The electrons radiate away their energy when moving through the magnetized nebula. Deep within the nebula, the pulsar is surrounded by a faint circle; this is where the expanding nebula causes the wind of electrons and ions to rapidly decelerate.
The finger-like structures seen extending to the north of the image are energising material in a neighbouring gas cloud called RCW 89. The energy being transferred into these knots of material causes them to glow brightly in X-rays: these are the orange and red features in the upper right of the image. The temperature in this region seems to vary in a circular pattern around the emission, which suggests the pulsar may be spinning while sweeping an energising beam around the gas in RCW 89.
