Rape seems to be on the increase in Ghana. This may be because more victims are coming forward to talk about the crime. But just because more rapes are being reported does not mean that more rapists are being punished. Our reporter Lois Beckett found that more than half of rape cases never make it to trial—simply because victims cannot afford the cost.

They rape a woman, five or six of them at a time — but that is not enough. Then they shoot a gun into her vagina,” says Dr. Mukwege. “In all my years here, I never saw anything like it. … [T]o see so many raped, that shocks me, but what shocks me more is the way they are raped.

Typically, an attack begins a few hours after nightfall. After encircling a village, armed men divide into groups that alternately plunder and rape. Around 2 or 3 a.m., they grab men from the village to help carry the booty back to their base. The most ragtag of the armed bands, the jungle-dwellers, the Mayi Mayi (originally local self-defense militiamen) and armed Hutus—genocide criminals or survivors of the massacres in the “first war”—will also kidnap women and girls from the target village. These women serve as domestic and sexual slaves for weeks or months, and they are sometimes traded from one armed band to another.
Since the beginning of 2002, the sexual assaults have followed patterns so common that they are becoming commonplace. Several men gang-rape a woman, repeatedly. The husband is tied up in the hut, the children are brought in; the whole family is obliged to witness the humiliation of the wife and mother. “Eight or 10 of them raped me,” one victim recounts. “My husband told me so.” The victim passed out well before the men had finished with her. Increasingly, the assailants force fathers to commit incest with daughters, or brothers with sisters. They even sodomize men, a practice that is unimaginable in the African countryside, even as part of consensual sex. The victims range in age from 4 to 80.

Africa are committed against children under 3 years of age.
At least in South Africa, the conclusion has to be drawn that
the rape of very young children is not uncommon.

The rape of an infant or toddler is a brutal act. To penetrate
the vagina of a small child, the perpetrator must first create a
common channel between the vagina and the anal canal by
forced insertion of an implement. Rape in this manner can be
immediately life-threatening

Factors associated with raping
Age was significantly associated with the likelihood of having raped, with men aged
20-40 more likely to have raped than younger or older men. Education was also
associated, with men who had raped being significantly better educated, although
they were not more likely to have a tertiary qualification.

Since 2007 there have been at least 40 albinos murdered in Tanzania and their limbs, skin and genitals hacked off to supply the witch doctors with material in which to make their magical potions. ... A gang murdered and mutilated a 10-year-old albino girl in Tanzania - because they wanted to sell her body parts to witch doctors. ... In 2007, police in Tanzania reported several cases of people digging up the bodies of children to remove organs, in many cases the genitals and eyes, to make potions used in rituals. ... And authorities in Kenya and Burundi, where albino killings have also been reported in recent months, have started to give added protection.
Some reports say albino skin is prized in the Democratic Republic of Congo, another troubled African nation where superstition is high.

Like many young girls in Zimbabwe, Hope was the victim of a widely held belief that if a man with HIV or AIDS rapes a virgin he will be cured of his disease. This so-called virgin myth, perpetuated by Zimbabwe's traditional healers, has led to the rape of hundreds of girls, according to UNICEF. Some of those victims are too young to walk, much less protect themselves.

In recent years, South Africa has seen a string of occult crimes where people have been the victims of a ritual muti killing.
Such killings are usually distinguished by the dismembered bodies of the victims. It is believed that body parts -- including internal organs -- are sometimes removed from victims still living, in the belief that their screams enhance the medicine's power.

"The removal of genitals is very characteristic," Labuschagne says. "The parts have different significances -- a hand might be used by a businessman who wants to attract customers. Genitals are a source of good luck."

WITH their milky white skin, wispy hair and haunting, pale eyes, they are called "the living ghosts" by locals.
And the vulnerable albinos of Tanzania in East Africa have more than insults to fear.
They are being hunted down and hacked to death to satisfy a growing demand for their body parts and blood to use in black magic.
It is the stuff of nightmares.
In the Mwanga district, near Mount Kilimanjaro, a baby girl was dressed in black by her mother and left alone in the family hut.
A group of men cut off the pale girl's legs, slit her throat, poured the blood into a pot and drank it.
In another sickening case a man was caught trying to enter the Democratic Republic of Congo with an albino child's HEAD in his luggage.
He said a businessman in the country had offered to pay generously for the trophy, depending on the weight of the head.

The study is by far the largest, consisting of 3,636 people who all identified themselves as either white, African-American, East Asian or Hispanic. Of these, only five individuals had DNA that matched an ethnic group different than the box they checked at the beginning of the study. That's an error rate of 0.14 percent.

Races have evolved away from each other over the past 10,000 years, according to new research that challenges standard ideas about the biological significance of ethnicity.

There are strong grounds for suggesting that the hypothesis that
H. sapiens is polytypic [polytypic=finns flera raser] rather than
monotypic is at least plausible:
this argument is based upon the following lines of reasoning.
Firstly, it has been demonstrated that there exists a considerable
degree of diversity (as measured by morphology, heterozygosity
and FST) within this taxon, which is structured in such a way that

In summary, we have studied the same worldwide population
sample as Rosenberg et al. (2002) with a set of
40 biallelic slow-evolving short insertion-deletion polymorphisms.
We found that the genetic structure of the
populations included in the HGDP-CEPH Diversity
Panel is best portrayed by a picture of the world divided
into genetic clusters that tightly correspond to
five geographic regions: America, Sub-Saharan Africa,
East Asia, Oceania and a group composed of Europe,
the Middle East and Central Asia. We have also shown
that with our set of indels we disclose an among-regions
component of genetic variance considerably larger than
was estimated by Rosenberg et al. (2002) using microsatellites.

Thus the answer to the question “How often is a pair of individuals from one population genetically more dissimilar than two individuals chosen from two different populations?” depends on the number of polymorphisms used to define that dissimilarity and the populations being compared. The answer, equation M44 can be read from Figure 2. Given 10 loci, three distinct populations, and the full spectrum of polymorphisms (Figure 2E), the answer is equation M45 [congruent with] 0.3, or nearly one-third of the time. With 100 loci, the answer is ~20% of the time and even using 1000 loci, equation M46 [congruent with] 10%. However, if genetic similarity is measured over many thousands of loci, the answer becomes “never” when individuals are sampled from geographically separated populations.

A striking feature of the samples used for this study is how well the geographic origin of the samples appears to correlate with the genetic origin, so that separating the samples by country of origin or on the basis of genetic measures gives similar results. ... In conclusion, we have shown that using PCA techniques it is possible to detect fine-level genetic variation in European samples.

Since Fst among human
populations on a world scale is reliably 10 to 15%, kinship between two individuals
of the same human population is equivalent to kinship between grandparent and
grandchild or between half siblings. The widespread assertion that this is small and
insignificant should be reexamined.

We studied 938 unrelated individuals
from 51 populations of the Human Genome Diversity Panel at 650,000 common single-nucleotide
polymorphism loci. Individual ancestry and population substructure were detectable with very high
resolution.

Immigration is an important force shaping
the social structure, evolution, and genetics of populations. A
statistical method is presented that uses multilocus genotypes
to identify individuals who are immigrants, or have recent
immigrant ancestry. ... The test has power to detect immigrant
ancestors, for these data, up to two generations in the past
even though the overall differentiation of allele frequencies
among populations is low.

A 1996 statement by the American Psychological Association gave about .45 for children and about .75 during and after adolescence.[8] A 2004 meta-analysis of reports in Current Directions in Psychological Science gave an overall estimate of around .85 for 18-year-olds and older.

Biological offspring continued to rank higher in IQ scores than white
adoptees, who were followed in ranking by black/interracial adoptees and
Asian/Indian adoptees, respectively. Adoptees with two black parents scored
lower than other family groups.

The study shows mean IQs of 89 and 106, respectively, of black and white children reared in matched social environments. ...
This shows that the social environment in which the black children were reared had no effect on narrowing the gap between black and white IQs.

The test performance of the Black/Black adoptees was not different from that of ordinary Black children reared by their own families in the same area of the country. My colleagues and I reported the data accurately and as fully as possible, and then tried to make the results palatable to environmentally committed colleagues. This was a mistake. The results of the transracial adoption study can be used to support either a genetic difference hypothesis or an environmental difference one (because the children have visible African ancestry). We should have been agnostic on the conclusions; Art would have been.

He says that he is “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours – whereas all the testing says not really”, and I know that this “hot potato” is going to be difficult to address.

Despite repeated claims to the contrary, there
has been no narrowing of the 15- to 18-point average
IQ difference between Blacks and Whites (1.1
standard deviations). The differences are as large
today as when first measured nearly 100 years
ago. Racial group differences, and the associated
gaps in living standards, education levels etc., are
rooted in factors that are largely heritable, not cultural.

A 60-page review of the scientific evidence, some based on state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain size, has concluded that race differences in average IQ are largely genetic.

Brain Size Differences. Studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) find a correlation of brain size with IQ of about 0.40. Larger brains contain more neurons and synapses and process information faster. Race differences in brain size are present at birth. By adulthood, East Asians average 1 cubic inch more cranial capacity than Whites who average 5 cubic inches more than Blacks.

Our estimate of average IQ converges with the finding that national IQs of sub-Saharan African countries as predicted from several international studies of student achievement are around 82. ... There can be little doubt that Africans average lower IQs than do westerners.

Genes play a big part in IQ, personality, attitudes, and other behaviors. This is true for Orientals, Whites, and Blacks. Trans-racial adoption studies (where infants of one race are adopted and reared by parents of a different race), studies of regression to the mean (which compare parents and siblings in the different racial groups), and of inbreeding depression (which study the children of closely-related parents) all provide evidence for why genes cause the races to differ in IQ and personality. No purely cultural theory can explain these results, which are not only explained but predicted by genetic theory.

Mean IQ scores for Blacks (89.0) and Whites (98.1) differed by 9.1
standard score points.

For as long as official statistics have been kept, blacks in white societies have been overrepresented in all indices of social pathology: crime, illegitimacy, poverty, school failure, and long-term unemployment. ... More clear-headed observers, however, have sought a partial explanation in the low average IQ of blacks.

I propose that the variable that explains these differences is that blacks are more psychopathic than whites.

Out of the 36 Matrices problems, the African students solved an average of 23;
East Indian students, 26; and White students, 29 (po.001), placing them at the 60th, 71st,
and 86th percentiles, respectively, and yielding IQ equivalents of 103, 108, and 118 on the
1993 US norms. ...The results imply that scores on the Raven’s Matrices are as valid for
Africans as they are for non-Africans.

In an analysis of mathematics and reading scores from tests such as the NAEP and Coleman Report over the last 54 years, we show that there has been no narrowing of the gap in either IQ scores or in educational achievement. From 1954 to 2008, Black 17-year-olds have consistently scored at about the level of White 14-year-olds, yielding IQ equivalents of 85 for 1954, 82 for 1965, 70 for 1975, and 81 for 2008. We conclude that predictions about the Black–White IQ gap narrowing as a result of the secular rise are unsupported.
The (mostly heritable) cause of the one is not the (mostly environmental) cause of the other. The Flynn Effect (the secular rise in IQ) is not a Jensen Effect (because it does not occur on g).

The 3+ year education gap between Blacks and Whites
did not begin with the 1975 NAEP tests. It was found from
1954 to 1965 in the State of Georgia with data on reading and
mathematics from about 1500 White and 800 Black students
using the California Achievement Test.

In Ethiopia, Nurame's story happens every day. In 2003 – the last year for which statistics are available – the National Committee on Traditional Practices of Ethiopia found that 69 per cent of marriages begin like this, with the triple-whammy of abduction, rape, and a forced signature. In a country with a mixture of Protestant, Catholic and Muslim, all religions practise it equally.
