Medical examiners take and save photographs of homicide victims as part of their official death investigation and evidence collection. These photographs document the condition of the body, identify any injuries, and become a permanent, legally protected part of the investigative record.
Medical examiner and coroner offices follow strict protocols for taking, saving, and releasing these images:
What is Photographed: Investigators photograph the body at the scene, as well as every stage of the autopsy, including facial features for identification, surface wounds, internal organs, and trace evidence.
How They Are Stored: Autopsy photos are stored securely in official forensic and law enforcement databases. Depending on the state and jurisdiction, homicide files and their accompanying photographs are retained permanently or for a minimum of \(25\) years.
Who Can Access Them: These photographs are not public records and are highly confidential. They are only released under a court order, a subpoena, or through legal discovery to prosecutors and defense attorneys for a criminal trial.Family Access: Next-of-kin generally do not have automatic access to copies of graphic autopsy photos to prevent trauma. In some jurisdictions, the immediate family or their legal representative may view the photos under strict supervision at the medical examiner's office, or obtain them via a formal legal request.
