what is the current status of Teslas FSD , and how does it compare to Waymos current deployment?
Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD)
Current Status: Tesla's FSD operates at Level 2 autonomy, requiring constant driver supervision. The latest software versions, such as FSD v12.5.2 and the anticipated v13, aim to reduce driver interventions and enhance features like Smart Summon and Autopark .

Robotaxi Deployment: Tesla plans to launch a limited robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, by June 2025, starting with approximately 10 vehicles under human supervision and restricted routes. Expansion to other cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco is planned, with a target of scaling to thousands of vehicles by 2026 .
Regulatory and Safety Concerns: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is scrutinizing Tesla's FSD due to concerns over its performance in various conditions and its association with several fatal crashes . Tesla's approach, relying on AI and camera-based systems without LiDAR, has raised questions about its ability to handle unexpected driving situations.
Waymo Autonomous Driving
Current Deployment: Waymo operates fully autonomous, driverless ride-hailing services in cities including Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin. The company conducts over 250,000 paid rides weekly and has received approval to expand operations into additional areas such as San Jose .
Technology and Partnerships: Waymo utilizes a comprehensive sensor suite, including LiDAR, radar, and cameras, for its autonomous vehicles. The company has partnerships with automakers like Jaguar Land Rover and collaborates with Uber for ride-hailing services in certain cities .
Expansion Plans: Waymo is testing and planning to launch services in new cities, including Miami, Atlanta, and internationally in Tokyo. The company continues to scale its operations, focusing on safety and regulatory compliance.
In summary, Tesla is progressing with its FSD technology, focusing on software enhancements and limited supervised deployments, while facing regulatory scrutiny. In contrast, Waymo has established fully autonomous services in several cities, leveraging a robust sensor suite and strategic partnerships to expand its reach.

Who would you deem to be in the lead , if you had to bet on a winner?
If I had to bet today, Waymo is clearly in the lead in terms of real-world deployment, safety, and regulatory alignment:
Why Waymo:
Level 4 autonomy already deployed (fully driverless, no supervision) in multiple cities.
High ride volume: Hundreds of thousands of paid rides per week.
Regulatory approvals: Actively expanding with government support.
Proven tech stack: Uses LiDAR + radar + cameras, which is more reliable in diverse conditions.
Tesla's position:
Ambitious vision and massive fleet.
Still Level 2 (needs human supervision).
Heavy focus on AI-only (vision-based) approach, which is riskier short term.
Faces regulatory hurdles and safety concerns.
Summary:
Short to mid-term (1–3 years): Waymo is the safer bet.
Long-term wildcard: If Tesla’s AI approach succeeds and scales, they could leapfrog—but that’s speculative.
