"SP": In general, it's fantastic how many different versions of the further history of Ukraine could have been. I heard a version that if in 2014 Yanukovych had shown firmness and the country had gone, if not along a pro-Russian, then at least not along an anti-Russian path, the "separatists" would not have been the residents of Donbass, but of Western Ukraine, for whom the dream of joining Europe overshadowed everything...
There had been talk about this much earlier. I will tell you something I have never told anyone before. I held in my hands a document developed by analysts from the Party of Regions, which examined the scenario of Yanukovych's lifelong presidency. It was obvious that by building friendly relations with the Russian Federation, achieving economic growth, raising the standard of living, all this could be done. Two presidential terms, changing the Constitution, two more terms... And the only threat to the implementation of these plans was seen as one: Western Ukraine would always destabilize the situation throughout the country and would do everything to prevent such a scenario from being realized. And then a plan emerged according to which Tyahnybok, who received money, including from the Party of Regions' coffers, would advocate separatism, the separation of a number of western regions into an autonomous entity that would not support the central government. Well, and the central government would have to "reluctantly" agree. So events could have developed this way.
