Neurobiologen Stuart Hameroff och fysikern Roger Penrose, som fick Nobel-priset 2020, har under många år utarbetat en kvantmekanisk hypotes hur medvetandet och fria viljan kan ske just genom sådana kvantkoherenta effekter i hjärncellernas microtubili (se bifogade Physics of Life Reviews, Dec 2013 "Consciousness in the universe; A review of the "Orch OR" theory").

Very large masses can be involved in quantum superpositions, occurring in the universe in quantum-mechanical situations, for example in the cores of neutron stars. One might imagine that τ would then be ridiculously tiny. But EG could still be relatively small if the mass-displacement remains small owing to the uniformity of the material. But generally, by OR, such large-scale superpositions would reduce extremely quickly, and classically unreasonable superpositions would be rapidly eliminated. Whether such quantum systems could be orchestrated to have meaningful, cognitive Orch OR conscious moments is unknown, but it is certainly conceivable that sentient creatures might have evolved in parts of the universe that would be highly alien to us, for example on neutron-star surfaces, with very large scale superpositions, and presumably very high frequency OR events, an idea that was developed ingeniously and in great detail by Robert Forward in two science-fiction stories (Dragon’s Egg in 1980, Starquake in 1989 [171,172]). Such creatures (referred to as ‘cheelas’ in the books), with metabolic processes and presumably Orch OR-like events occurring at rates of around a million times that of a human being, could arguably have intense experiences, but whether or not this would be possible in detail is, of now, a very speculative matter. Nevertheless, the Orch OR proposal offers a possible route to rational argument, as to whether conscious life of a totally alien kind such as this, or some other form of quantum superposition, might be possible, or even probable, somewhere in the universe.

Overarching all the expression and arguments of this lecture series is the insight that each of us is a participant in some great mysterious drama as Sherrington and Schrödinger believed. The profound tragedy of our age is that this religious vision has become dimmed and rejected. As stated in above quotations from Popper, the strict dogma of science, in the conversation laws for example, leads to a philosophy of materialism and determinism with the closedness of World 1; and quantal indeterminacy provides not the slightest opening for the exercise of human freedom and creativity. Schopenhauer has wittingly stated that materialism .... "is the philosophy of a subject who has forgotten to take account of himself."
By contrast I attempt to build a philosophy in which one´s personal existance is central, but in which solipsism is rejected. There is recognition of the great mysteries in which we are immersed. Central to these mysteries is the fact of our personal existance as an experiencing and creating being, our coming-to-be in life and our apparent ceasing-to-be in death. I repudicate philosophies and political systems which recognize human beings as mere things with a material existance of value only as cogs in the great bureaucratic machine of the state, which thus becomes a slave state. The terrible and cynical slaveries depicted in Orwell's 1984 are engulfing more and more of our planet....Is there yet time to rebuild a philosophy and a religion that can give us a renewed faith in this great spiritual adventure, which for each of us is human life lived in freedom and dignity?
