THE STAKES What was expected to be the smoothest part of the trip, a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, has become fraught, after revelations this week that Mr. Trump disclosed intelligence from Israel about a possible Islamic State plot against commercial airplanes in a meeting with Russian officials at the White House.

Visits the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Western Wall.

THE STAKES Mr. Trump is expected to meet with Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian leader. Mr. Trump has said he wants to broker a “bigger and better deal” between the Israelis and the Palestinians than previous presidents have attempted.

Meets with Mr. Abbas.

Lays a wreath at the Holocaust memorial museum.

Gives speech at the Israel Museum before departing for Rome.

Wednesday, May 24 Rome, the Vatican, Brussels

THE STAKES Pope Francis has been critical of the president’s policies on the environment and refugees; during the election campaign, Mr. Trump called the pontiff’s criticism “disgraceful.”

Meets with Pope Francis at the Vatican and tours St. Peter’s Basilica.

Heads to the Quirinal Palace in Rome, the official residence of President Sergio Mattarella of Italy.

Arrives in Brussels late afternoon and meets with King Philippe of Belgium.

Thursday, May 25 Brussels

THE STAKES Mr. Trump has criticized NATO and threatened to leave. Though he has stepped away from some of those comments, he is expected to push members of the alliance to spend more on defense.

Meets with European Union officials.

Lunch with President Emmanuel Macron of France.

Dinner with other leaders of the 28 NATO countries.

Friday, May 26 Sicily

THE STAKES The president will be expected to reassure his counterparts of the Group of 7 major industrial democracies, including leaders of some of America’s closest allies, that he is a reliable statesman and not an unpredictable populist.

Participates in the annual summit meeting of the Group of 7 powers.

Visits American troops stationed at the Sigonella naval air station in Sicily.
