Albania ready to join EU’s visa-free regime

Albania has made good progress over recent months and now meets the criteria for non-EU member states to join the visa-free regime.

LJUBLJANA, February 12, 2010 (AFP) - Albania has made good progress over recent months and now meets the criteria for non-EU member states to join the European Union's visa-free regime, its foreign minister said here Friday.

"Albania today meets all the criteria set by the European Commission for the visa liberalisation and we hope for a positive evaluation soon," Ilir Meta told a news conference.

In December, Brussels abolished visas for citizens from Balkan states Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro after their governments met all the necessary requirements.

Albania, Bosnia and Kosovo were not considered ready just yet.

"What we have been doing so far grants us that Albania will soon get a positive evaluation soon, hopefully Bosnia will get it too," said Meta, who is also Albania's deputy prime minister, after meeting his Slovenian counterpart Samuel Zbogar.

European foreign ministers in November agreed that Albania had made important progress and should be considered for official EU candidate status, a key step forward for the small southern nation's membership ambitions.

BERLUSCONI TO BERISHA, WORK FOR TIRANA IN EU

ANSAmed) - ROMA - ''We spoke about it last night at the European Council; everyone wants to turn the Balkans into EU Countries''. Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi, at the end of the meeting in Rome with Albanian premier Sali Berisha, offered his personal guarantee to give Albania the state of EU candidate Country'' and for the ''liberalisation of visas by October 2010''. The Italian premier pointed out that he dealt with the issue with the leaders of Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia. He added that ''It is in Europe that the Balkans can find the definitive solution to the ethnical and political contrasts which made the Balkans into an effervescent area''. Albanias premier expressed his deep gratitude to Italy for the extraordinarily important assistance it gave in January on occasion of the floods that hit Albania. ''Mr. prime minister, it is my duty to thank once again from the heart your good, great pilots who worked in terrible atmospheric conditions and saved many lives'', added Berisha, who wanted to emphasise the major contribution of Roberto Guercio, Berlusconi's envoy for the emergency in Albania. Berisha then invited the Italian premier to Albania where, he stated, Silvio Berlusconi is ''a celebrity loved by all Albanians who had many occasions to show his feelings towards my Country and my fellow citizens''. Albania has world’s best growth in tourism, investment

Albania recently witnessed an impressive growth in tourism this year. The government of Albania announced that there was a 42 percent increase in the number of tourists visiting the country compared to last year, AENews reported. With new hotels, resorts, bars and restaurants, the Albanian private sector in tourism has been growing an average of 30 percent for five years. The Albanian economy had the best growth in Europe last year, and this trend is expected to continue this year as well. Foreign investments in Albania have increased 59 percent this year. The Albanian government under Prime Minister Berisha, has created an excellent environment to attract investors to Albania. Special emphasis was paid on constructions of roads and improving infrastructure. The efforts on improving the legal system to protect investors also proved significant. It was also reported that many Western European companies have chosen to escape the high taxes in Europe by investing in Albania as the latter offers the best tax system in Europe with a 10 percent flat tax.

CORRECTED: Sweeping majority of Albanians favour EU entry, poll shows

A total of 88% of Albanians are in favour of the Balkan country eventually joining the European Union, with 89% saying they would vote in favour if a referendum were held, a survey conducted by Gallup Europe showed.

The poll's findings on perceptions of Albanians concerning European integration were presented at a workshop on February 19 by Robert Manchin, director of Gallup Europe.

The survey is part of a project named the Gallup Balkan Monitor (www.balkan-monitor.eu), financed by The European Fund for the Balkans (www.balkanfund.org).

Following the EU executive Commission’s evaluation of progress by the Western Balkans towards European integration, the monitor on public opinion in the region offers insights into views of the EU and domestic topics including standard of living, trust in political parties, courts, and the battle against corruption and organized crime.

Hungary puts weight behind Albania's EU accession bid

Hungary supports Albania's bid to take up the accession process for membership of the European Union, and hopes that it can start this procedure sometime this year, President Pal Schmitt said on Thursday after meeting his Albania counterpart, Bamir Topi.

Schmitt said that Albania, as a new member of NATO, said the country had made a significant contribution to the stability of the Western Balkan region.

"We request substantive assistance in the interest of Albania obtaining EU candidate status either during Hungary's [EU] presidency or during Poland's," Schmitt said.

He added that Hungary regards Albania as an important country in the Western Balkan region, and he trusted that economic, cultural, tourist and scientific ties would embark on a new course of development based on the two countries' traditionally close ties.

Schmitt said among the priorities of Hungary's EU presidency was the further advancement of EU expansion in the region, an aim which Hungary had played an active part in -- particularly when Albania signed its stability agreement and the EU allowed Albania citizens to travel without visas.

During his two-day visit to Budapest the Albania president expressed thanks for the help that Hungary had already given in advancing his country's Euro-Atlantic integration.

"Albania will continue implementing democratic reforms and wishes to fulfil all expectations in the interest of its EU integration," Topi said.

He said Albania had an interest in cooperation between Western Balkan countries and peace in the region.

"In our vision of the future this means that every Western Balkan country enjoys the advantages of Euro-Atlantic integration," he said.

The presidents were in agreement that it was important that Albania should fully observe democratic principles when it holds its local elections on May 8.

Speaking about the election boycott by the Albanian opposition, the Hungarian president said he hoped the election would take place with "broad participation".
