Re: WSUS - HIDE/STOP "Restart Now" DialogBox
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is no way to disable the "Restart Now" option, as that is a /required/
action following the installation of updates that require a system restart.
The /best/ option is to not install updates while users are logged onto the
systems, thus eliminating the need for users to restart their systems in the
middle of the workday.
If you have a 'scheduled' reboot, perhaps /scheduling/ the installation of
the updates at the hour prior to the scheduled reboot would be a solution.
Another option is to configure the "Install Updates and Shutdown" options
for XP SP2 systems, but if you don't have XP SP2 systems this is not an
option.
"Installing" updates, and not restarting, accomplishes the following:
(a) The update is not really installed, which means the computer is not
protected by the patch, which means you might as well have not "installed"
the update until the system /can/ be restarted; and
(b) Part of the update might be active, and part of might not,
introducing the possibility that the user will now be working on an unstable
system, which could crash if a defective call is made to a DLL that's not
yet installed, but is thought to be.
As for the 'service' that generates the popup.... ALL of the activity at the
client system is handled by the "Automatic Updates" service, and if you
disable it, you'll get no updates at all.
