Italien: Minst fyra döda när linbanegondol föll då linan brast, Monte Faito (2025-04-17)

En person betecknades inledningsvis som saknad, men hittades senare död, enligt italienska Sky. Det ska ha varit fyra turister och en italiensk person ombord.

Olyckan skedde på Monte Faito, när vajern brast och en av gondolerna kraschade mot marken. Berget är en populär turistdestination för sin utsikt över Vesuvius och Neapelbukten.

The cableway, reopened on 10 April 2025 after ordinary and extraordinary maintenance work, [ 8 ] was nevertheless affected by an accident exactly one week later, on 17 April [ 8 ] . In the afternoon, the breakage of the traction cable with subsequent failure of the safety systems to start caused the ascending cabin, among other things just a few metres from arriving at the top station, to slide backwards accelerating sharply, only to then crash into the first support pylon, and fall into the void, finally stopping after rolling for several hundred metres towards the valley. The cabin was carrying 4 passengers, of whom only one survived in serious conditions, and the driver, an EAV employee , who also died in the crash. Fortunately, the cabin that was descending towards the valley did not suffer the same tragic fate: after the emergency systems had been successfully started, it remained suspended in mid-air for a few hours, but all the passengers were rescued after hours of complex rescue operations. Following the accident, due to the fall of the hauling cable onto the underlying tracks of the Circumvesuviana , the railway line was interrupted and, to facilitate the rescue operations, the nearby motorway exit was also closed.

He told Sky News the cause of the incident was being investigated, and that before its reopening, the cable car service had undergone three months of tests with checks carried out every morning.

"Everything we had to do was done," he said.

"Evidently something went wrong, we don't know what, whether an exceptional unforeseen event or human error. The investigators will discover all this."
