Why Russian authorities won’t pay compensation to the family of a dead sailor on the sunken cruiser Moskva
A letter released on May 6 from the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Black Sea Fleet (BSF) to Dmitriy Shkrebets, the father of Egor Shkrebets, a member of the Moskva crew, said the cruiser of April 14 sank. erroneously land in international waters.
"The warship was in international waters and did not take part in combat operations against Ukraine, and the whereabouts of the young Shkrebets are unknown", according to a letter from the Russian Navy.
The official decision disqualifies the Shkrebets family from benefits provided by the surviving family, including the 12 million rubles ($135,000 at the current exchange rate) that Russian President Vladimir Putin gave in a May 3 speech to close relatives of the slain Russian soldiers and Sailors had promised the fighting in connection with Ukraine.
The sinking of the Moskva was observed by nearby civilian cargo ships. Russian authorities say only a few dozen seafarers were killed in what they call an “incident”.
