Det är alldeles för kortfattat. Det som grundades 1 maj 1776 var Order of Perfectibilists, först senare bytte Weishaupt namnet till Order of Illuminati. Planerna för ett hemligt sällskap hade han utarbetat sedan 1771, och hade även ett litet sällskap, Wisdom Order, som plantskola.

Kurfusten i Bayern (och hans efterträdare, till stor besvikelse för Weishaupt) utfäste en rad edikt mot hemliga sällskap i allmänhet, och Illuminati i synnerhet:
