Many Russians are now refusing to repay their loans. According to the Federal Bailiffs Service (FSPP), between January and September 2023, the number of citizens defaulting on bank loans increased by 22% to 21.1 million. This means that almost half of the 47 million Russians with loans, according to the Russian Central Bank, have stopped paying their debts.
The total amount of debt that needs to be recovered rose to 2.9 trillion rubles ($31 billion) by the end of September, which is 200 billion rubles ($2 billion) more than a year earlier. For comparison, for the same period of the first nine months of 2022, the increase in debt amounted to only 100 billion rubles ($1 billion).
The leading positions in the number of debtors were taken by regions such as Bashkortostan, Krasnodar Krai, Krasnoyarsk Krai, as well as Moscow and Sverdlovsk region.
