Syria: Israel strikes air base used by Iran near Aleppo

The official Syrian news agency reports that Israeli launched missiles against a Syrian air base near Aleppo Sunday night night. Other sources reveal the target was the Al-Nayrab an airbase housing Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. DEBKAfile’s military sources add that this base, southeast of Aleppo, also serves Hizballah forces operating in the district and possibly pro-Iranian militias. If the Israeli attack is confirmed, it will serve to highlight a key issue on the table between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin at their face-to-face in Helsinki the following day: Syria and the removal of Iranian and Hizballah forces from the country.

/.../Alawite civilians in Latakia faced the prospect of being massacred if rebels had been able to capture the city, due to the virulently anti-Alawite views of Nusra Front members. Nusra religious clerics draw on the writings of the fringe 14th century Islamic scholar Ibn Taymiyya to argue that Alawites are “infidels” deserving of death. Syria analyst Sam Heller described Nusra clerics as promoting “toxic — even genocidal — sectarianism.” Rebels from the FSA, which have fought alongside and “in the ranks” of the Nusra Front throughout the conflict, also posed a threat to Alawite civilians in Latakia. While typically considered moderate in the Western press, many FSA battalions have been armed and funded by the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood (MB). Thanks to the influence of Brotherhood ideologue Said Hawwa, the Syrian Brotherhood strongly promoted the anti-Alawite sectarian views of Ibn Taymiyya from the 1960’s until the 1980’s. This anti-Alawite sectarianism re-emerged in segments of the Syrian opposition, including in elements of the FSA, when peaceful protests and armed insurrection against the Syrian government simultaneously erupted in Syria in the spring of 2011.

William Van Wagenen som har författat flera artiklar om Syrien har bl.a. skrivit om myten att Assad skulle ha släppt fångar för att elda på upproret så att han hade anledning att slå till hårt:

YPG Militia handed over Tishreen dam of Manbij to Syrian regime, Nedaa Syria's sources confirm

Kurdish Protection militia (YPG) handed over the Tishreen Dam to the Syrian regime in conjunction with preparations for the return of the latter's institutions in the city of Manbij east of Aleppo early next week.

Special sources told the network "Nedaa Syria" that: "The Syrian regime officially received the Dam in the presence of Brigadier General Bahjat Suleiman, commander of the Eastern Region in the air intelligence, while preparing for the return of the rest of the state institutions during the next week.

The sources added that the delivery of the dam is the implementation of the terms of the meeting, which was held between the Syrian regime and its allies Hezbollah & Iran on the one hand and the Kurdish protection militia YPG on the other in Aleppo almost twenty days ago.

NEW MAP update: #SAA forces continue their rapid advance in southern #Syria and secured more towns/villages today. Government forces also took control of Tell Harra - the highest point in #Daraa province.

Frågan är vad Israel kommer att göras annat än att bomba lite när deras egna terrorister och IS-skräp möter SAA.

Inget är väl konsensus nu.

Med tanke på att Ryssland har en hel del militärpolis etc med vid fronterna så tvivlar jag Israel kommer vilja bomba sålänge det inte är något extremt.

Bomba gör de konstant, bara längre in i landet.

Japp det stämmer, men de bombar inte där Ryssland har personal, det var det jag avsåg med mitt svar

Har fått uppfattningen om att det är frågan om iranskt närvaro (paramilitärer och formella stroidsförband) och diverse proxyaktörer under befallning av iranska stridsmakten (Hezbollah, Badr, Al-sadr etc.) som driver Israel till att militärt ingripa i Syrien med dessa återkommande bombningarna.

Ryssland värderar sina relationer med Israel i mycket högre avseende än sin relation till Iran samt så är Syrien och Ryssland bara under goda villkor på grund av historiskt arv. Ryssland kommer antagligen verka för att köra ut Iran ur landet.

Om iransk militär närvaro upphör på syrisk mark kan ett fredsavtal av en sådan sort som var på väg att realiseras 2009 att komma att bli på agendan. Hoppas personligen i så fall på att Israel återger golanhöjderna. Tror dock inte att det kommer hända, men det skulle i teorin visa på genuin fredsvilja och normalisera relationerna mellan de två länderna.
