Goaltender Kevin Weekes slept through the emergency. The problem for the Rangers was that it appeared he was still sleeping when the game began.
In his first start since missing four games because of an injured groin muscle, Weekes allowed goals on the first three shots he faced, and the Islanders held off the Rangers, 5-4, to sweep their home-and-home series.
Weekes did nothing to quell a possible goalie controversy with his backup, the rookie Henrik Lundqvist, who won three games in Weekes's absence.

Weekes allowed goals on the first three shots of the game. The first came after only 1 minute 29 seconds of play. The came at 1:55, and the third at 2:47, putting the Rangers in a 3-0 deficit before half of the 15,847 in the crowd reached their seats. It was the first Rangers-Islanders game at Nassau Coliseum that was not a sellout since April 4, 1998, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Miroslav Satan opened the scoring with a two-on-one break with Alexei Yashin, and Weekes cannot be faulted for allowing that goal. The next three he allowed, including a short-handed goal to Arron Asham at 1:47 of the second period, probably should have been stopped.
When asked if he could explain what happened, Weekes said, "Not really."

Rangers Coach Tom Renney, in addressing his goalie situation, said: "If you want to get to the playoffs and win there, you better have two goaltenders that are very good. I believe that we have that. Kevin Weekes is our No. 1 goaltender. That's the way it is. I'll make decisions based on performance. I'll make decisions based on schedule. I'll make decisions based on how I want to do things. And that's that."
