Jag undrar över antalet judar som med tåg och andra transportmedel fick flytta från sin hemort och vidare till läger eller annan ort. Hur många människor rörde det sig om som förflyttades?
Omöjligt att säga med säkerhet, då bland annat folkbokföringen öster om Weichsel ofta var mycket dålig. Många judar som bodde på tysk eller ockuperad mark före kriget flydde ju också när tyskarna kom rullande, till exempel till Sovjetunionen. (Eller i fråga om sovjetiska judar, länge österut in i Sovjet.)
Himmler lät under kriget anställa en viss doktor Richard Korherr för att uppskatta det europeiska "judeproblemets" dimensioner. Hans expertutredning blev klar tidigt 1943, och ger ett hum om hur tyskarna såg på saken. Tysk respektive engelsk version nedan:

Som Korherr nämner saboterade judarna själva aktivt NS-statens försök att identifiera dem, vilket förstås gjorde hans egen uppgift svårare. Men sammantaget tycks det röra sig om ungefär 2,5 miljoner deporterade fram till årsskiftet:
