En serie av omständigheter gjorde att hon hamnade i New York och där pluggade hon på Metropolitan Vocational High School. Denne skola döptes sedermera om till High School of Performing Arts. Filmen
Fame från 1980 utspelar sig i just denna skola. Förutom Kitt så har bland annat Liza Minnelli och Jennifer Aniston gått på skolan.
