Robert Maxwell's sudden demise was suspicious; his companies' debts far outweighed its assets. He had plundered his newspaper group's pension fund to boost up the share price. His body was later recovered from the sea, putting a dampener on the conspiracy theory that he had faked his own death.

There was talk that he had been assassinated he had links with Mossad (the Israeli secret service), and Moscow's KGB. Kevin Maxwell thinks the death was an accident; he simply lost his balance and fell overboard, and not on purpose either. Sometimes people just can't accept that accidents happen to crooked businessmen too. "The word suicide was not in my father's vocabulary," he says. "We are not all agreed on what happened, though. I think it was an accident, my sister thinks it was murder."
