There is no universal legal requirement in Sweden or the broader EU mandating that car manufacturers supply spare parts for a specific number of years. However, most major automakers follow an industry standard of supplying parts for 10 to 15 years after production of a specific model ceases.
Despite the absence of a strict legal mandate for cars, you are protected by several related consumer rights:
Manufacturer Policies: Most global car brands adhere to an internal policy of maintaining a supply of major assembly and wear-and-tear parts for a minimum of 10 years.
The Swedish Consumer Sales Act (Konsumentköplag): While the law does not require companies to stock parts, it does make them liable for original manufacturing defects for up to 3 years after delivery. During this time, they must provide the means (either via original parts or adequate alternatives) to honor the warranty.
EU Right to Repair: The EU has expanded "Right to Repair" rules, which currently apply heavily to electronics and large appliances. While passenger cars are largely excluded from the strictest mandates of these recent directives, many manufacturers have voluntarily extended parts supply networks to build consumer goodwill and meet sustainability targets.
If you are dealing with a breakdown of an older vehicle, independent aftermarket suppliers (which specialize in OEM-equivalent or refurbished parts) or official brand forums can often source components long after the factory discontinues them
