Jon Bon Jovi blew up his voice in the mid-eighties by booking more shows than his voice could handle and playing too many songs unsuitable for his voice. In the early nineties he'd hired a vocal couch and learned how to sing properly and had started to change vocal melodies when singing the big hits live but then again booked more shows than his voice could handle and refused to adjust the set. In the mid nineties he'd picked up smoking and with every subsequent tour he essentially repeated the same recipe. Record an album in a certain key, go on tour and not being able to do it live, damaging his vocal chords and by the time the tour ends his voice has worsened yet again. By the time the band had done 3 world tours after the release of It's My Life his voice had given in again but instead of cancelling shows when his voice was showing serious wear and tear he constantly did shows anyway further damaging his vocals. 25 years in his career he had to relearn how to sing again but also picked up a drinking habit by downing a few glasses of wine after every show, which also doesn't do your voice any favours. Rumour has it he's had surgery on his vocals in 2016 which went wrong thus resulting in whatever is left now but instead of adjusting the set and make it managable they're still doing the same shows with the same kind of setlists in the same tempo like he did 20 years ago.
