” There’s less than 40 hours of oxygen supply left on The Titan, the missing submarine that was designed to transport a small number of wealthy deep sea tourists to view the wreckage of Titanic.
The U.S. Coast Guard is leading a search and rescue operation for the OceanGate Expedition, which has been missing since Sunday.
On board the vessel is Hamish Harding - a British aviation tycoon and Shahzada Dawood - one of Pakistan's wealthiest men, along with his 19 year old son Sulaiman Dawood. P.H. Nargeolet, an experienced French navy diver who has led multiple previous missions to the Titanic, is also aboard.
The final member of the crew is Stockton Rush, the founder and CEO of OceanGate.
OceanGate has offered “mission specialist” expeditions to the site since 2021, costing $250,000 per passenger.
In a series of tweets posted this month, OceanGate praised their dependence on Starlink - a satellite internet provider developed by Elon Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX.
Their reliance on Starlink was intended to ensure seamless connectivity and internet access for communications on the voyage, which proved faulty as the vessel lost contact with their surface team 1 hour and 45 minutes into the dive.
Footage of the travelers pre-expedition revealed that the unregulated minivan-sized vessel included what appeared to be “improvised” mechanisms, like a video game controller to steer the ship.
A liability waiver also warned about the potential impacts of the excursion, including, but not limited to “emotional trauma” and death.
On April 15, 1912, the Titanic tragically sank when it collided with an iceberg, killing roughly 1,500 passengers and crew. The wreckage site lies a staggering 2.4 miles below sea level. “Can’t really blame the tour company,” wrote one Twitter user. “They offered an immersive titanic experience and delivered. Being dead at the bottom of the ocean”
