"There are a few persistent misconceptions about hypersonic missiles. They're not invincible, but more difficult to intercept, and it's not their speed (directly) alone that makes this so.
For starters, "Hypersonic missile" applies to two kinds of weapons systems:
1. Fractional Orbital Bombardment Systems (FOPS) and Maneuverable Hypersonic Glide Vehicles (MHGV). These are experimental strategic weapons and are outside the scope of this discussion.
2. Tactical missiles like Kinzhal.
Where speed is concerned, keep in mind that systems like THAAD are designed to intercept ballistic projectiles coming in in excess of Mach 20. Speed isn't what makes them difficult to intercept, though it does drastically reduce response time.
Ballistic projectiles, as the name suggests travel on ballistic trajectories, which are predictable -- If you know the velocity and what arc it's on, you can trivially extrapolate where it's going to be when your interceptors get there, this is the premise on which missile defense works.
Maneuverable cruise missiles throw that out the window.
Hypersonic missiles also plasmify the air around them when traveling at hypersonic speeds, this plasma shield absorbs radar waves, which give the missiles stealth properties.
The thing with Khinzal (and this is unconfirmed hearsy), it's maneuverable and non-hypersonic in its approach stage, and hypersonic in its terminal stage, as I understand it's ballistic during its hypersonic stage.
So if you're able to track it in its non-hypersonic stage, and keep the lock through the plasma shield when it goes into its hypersonic stage, then it's a really fast ballistic missile with stealth properties.
Remeber, if it's ballistic, and you know where it is, how fast it's going, and what arc it's on, you know exactly where it's going to be and when." (anti-ukrainsk twittrare)
