De var ju helt enkelt snurrigt. Handelsavtalet med EU, så som det skulle utformas (tvinga till tullar mot Ryssland) strider mot Russo-Ukrainian Friendship treaty:

Party. To this end, recognizing the need for the gradual formation and development of a common
economic area through the creation of conditions for the free movement of goods, services, capital

economic reforms, deepening economic integration on the basis of mutual advantage and
harmonizing their economic legislation."
Så man kan ju förstå att Ryssland sa att "om ni gör detta, så blir det handelskrig". Jag tror helt enkelt man ska se Ukraina den gången som ett u-land där ingenting riktigt fungerade. I en fungerande demokrati så hade någon tagit fram detta avtal i valrörelsen och ställt frågor på hur det egentligen var tänkt att fungera.
Värt att lägga till var att Ukraina inte tilläts gå med i rysslands tull-union (och samtidigt i EUs) var för att vitryssland och kazakstan inte är med i World Trade Organisation. Yanukovich var ju väldigt för att ingå handelsavtal med EU över ryssland, han var ju född i östra ukraina och ansågs som den perfekta att genomföra detta för att blidka pro ryssarna i öst

Ryssland hade ju dragit åt tumskruvarna genom att genomföra blockader på vissa varor ifrån Ukraina för att sätta press på deras ekonomi:

EU skulle ha visat sig vara med flexibla 2013 isåfall hade vi nog sluppit mycket av det som sen drog igång.
