"The U.S. government debt was only $907 billion when Volcker hiked interest rates in 1980, or about 30 percent of its total size.
As of today, the U.S. has a $28 trillion debt load, or 125 percent of the total U.S. economy. This means that our debt is worth 25 percent more than our economic output.
U.S. taxpayers must pay interest on the nation's debt when the Fed tightens the money supply and raises interest rates. The higher the debt, the greater the pain.
The Fed created all this national debt through its own experiments. In order to accomplish this, the Fed implemented a program called quantitative easing, or QE. It is impossible to overstate the importance of QE. Between 2008 and today, the Fed created about 9 trillion new dollars under this program. Compared to its historic rate, the Fed has printed 900 years' worth of money in just over 10 years. (To put that in perspective, the Fed created only about $1 trillion in its first 95 years.) All that money was injected straight into the Wall Street banking system, pumping up the very markets, such as stocks and bonds, that are now being threatened by the Fed's tightening."
