University of California, Davis, 30:e mars 2021:Studies show long-haul COVID-19 afflicts 1 in 4 COVID-19 patients, regardless of severity
A patient’s age, prior health or severity of their COVID-19 case does not seem to matter
...
Doctors have been estimating one-quarter to one-third of COVID-19 patients become long haulers, as many patients call themselves. Now, four studies published since February confirm that range. They show that 27% to nearly 33% of patients who had COVID-19 but did not need to be hospitalized later developed some form of long-haul COVID.
...
Another consistent finding is that it does not appear to matter whether non-hospitalized patients had more severe cases of COVID-19, mild cases or even cases that caused no symptoms at all.
Just as consistently, age or prior health – whether people were active and fit or had some previous health issues like diabetes or respiratory problems – made only a very small difference, if any, among non-hospitalized patients.
“Obesity and diabetes stand out as risk factors that can make COVID-19 very serious and require hospitalization. They also increase the risk for those hospitalized patients to develop post-COVID symptoms,” said Sandrock, who works with the UC Davis Health Post-COVID-19 Clinic. “But among outpatients, risk factors made very little difference in the study numbers. That’s also what we’re seeing. Anyone can get long-haul COVID.”
Even the mildest cases can cause long-haul COVID
...
“What’s so unusual is to see a large group of people who seemed to have less severe cases have such long-lasting symptoms,” Sandrock said. “This is not something we’ve seen with any other infectious disease.”
...
“Fatigue and shortness of breath is what we see the most,” Sandrock said. “But one of the things about Post-COVID is that everybody seems to react differently.”
...
“From the pattern we’ve seen so far, we can say some patients don’t get better but many do, although the pace is glacial,” he said. “We tell people not to look back day to day or even week to week, but they can see they’re improving month to month. Right now, that is at least something and we hope we will learn more soon.”
Vissa hävdar att med bra kost och motion, så är Covid ingenting man behöver bekymra sig om. Men det stämmer inte enligt professor
Christian Sandrock.
University of Minnesota, 1:a december 2021:Severe COVID tied to high risk of death, mostly by other causes, within year
Survivors of severe COVID-19—especially those younger than 65 years—may be at more than twice the risk of dying within the next year than those who had mild or moderate illness or were never infected, finds a study today in Frontiers in Medicine.
...
Patients younger than 65 at triple the risk
...
Relative to uninfected patients, those recovered from severe COVID-19 younger than 65 years had a 233% increased risk of dying in the next year. The increased risk was greater than that of survivors of severe COVID-19 who were 65 or older.
The authors noted that the deaths observed in the study often occurred long after the patients had recovered from their infection; thus, their families and physicians may never have linked the two events.
...
Patients' overall health likely declined
The finding that most deaths were not due to COVID-19 complications suggests that the health of these patients had declined since their initial diagnosis, leaving them susceptible to different medical conditions, the researchers wrote.
The results also underscore the importance of reducing the chances of severe disease through vaccination, said lead author Arch Mainous III, PhD, of the University of Florida, in a Frontiers news release.
"Taking your chances and hoping for successful treatment in the hospital doesn't convey the full picture of the impact of COVID-19," he said. "Our recommendation at this point is to use preventive measures, such as vaccination, to prevent severe episodes of COVID-19."
När dödsfallen inträffar långt efter infektionen, så kan vaccinmotståndarna utnyttja tillfället till att beskylla vaccinerna för att den totala mängden dödsfall i samhället har ökat.
Reuters, 29:e September 2021:At least one long-term symptom seen in 37% of COVID-19 patients -study
Sept 29 (Reuters) - At least one long-term COVID-19 symptom was found in 37% of patients three to six months after they were infected by the virus, a large study from Oxford University and the National Institute for Health Research showed on Wednesday.
Ändå finns det vissa som envisas med att kalla sjukdomen för en förkylning.
