“One of our problems is that we often don’t know we have a mental disorder that is severe, and we tend to withdraw and suffer in our own little world.”

"The people we interviewed gave many reasons for feeling suicidal. They felt suicidal because life did not feel worth living or because they felt hopeless in particular situations, such as coping with family or a relationship. Elizabeth attributed her suicidal thoughts to her “lack of… coping skills... It felt like any little hurdle that I came to, I just couldn’t face it”."
"Some people felt a more general hopelessness about the world or a lack of reason to live.
Sierra Rose says her thoughts were telling her, “look at the world we live in, the crap world and blah blah blah all of those negative voices talking in the back of your head, convincing you that life isn’t worth living.”
"A few people discussed reaching out via suicide helplines. Crystal said she, “called suicide hotlines daily” when she needed “short term solutions to help get me out of a panic attack or some sort of crash”."
Fångad i negativa tankemönster:

"Negative or destructive thought patterns are a common part of depression for many people. People we spoke to described this as “negative self-talk;” others as being “trapped in my head,” “thoughts going crazy,” or “a mental self-sabotage spiral of just doubt, self-doubt.” People recognized these patterns as dysfunctional, but they are not easy to overcome because, as Jeremy put it, “negativity begets negativity.”
Meghan describes her depression as "all in her head", her mind is uncontrollably racing with negative thoughts to the point where she can't fokus."
"And, once I realized my plan A wasn't working, my mind just started going to those really dark places that it always used to where, oh, if plan A isn't working then what's the point, I guess."
"When the fragile system of perfectionism fails, as it unavoidably must, depression rushes in. As Crystal puts it, the smallest failure can result in “punishing myself to… an extreme extent.”
Leva i en bubbla och isolera sig:
Citat:
"Each person described, in one way or another, being in their “own little world,” losing their motivation to do things, and becoming socially isolated. One person talked about “feeling so alien to the rest of the world around me.” Sam said that when he’s depressed he has to “unplug and not really communicate with anyone.”
"Others who were suffering more intensely said it was like being stuck in a hole or “very tight bubble,” being “uncomfortable in my own skin,” or living in a “shroud of darkness.”
Ryan described his depression as “like you have this huge ball of yarn that you’re never going to untangle but you keep trying anyways and it’s just painstaking.” Colin says for him depression can be a form of tunnel vision, and feeling better would mean getting his peripheral vision back."

Suicide often not preceded by warnings
“Many people who commit suicide do so without letting on they are thinking about it or planning it,” says Dr. Michael Miller, assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School."
"Although some people who commit suicide have an identifiable mental health problem, like depression or addiction, others don’t.
Some talk about wanting or planning to kill themselves or give other hints, others don’t."
“Many people never let on what they are feeling or planning. The paradox is that the people who are most intent on committing suicide know that they have to keep their plans to themselves if they are to carry out the act,” says Dr. Miller. “Thus, the people most in need of help may be the toughest to save.”
