As the situation in Aleppo, Syria, descends into what’s being described as a “complete meltdown of humanity,” horrifying stories of suffering are emerging from the war-torn city. The mass execution of civilians, including 11 women and 13 children, was reported. Innocents are being burned alive in the streets as barrel bombs dropped by the Assad regime’s forces rain down on them. And, according to a report from The Daily Beast, civilians under the age of 40 who fled the bombardments only to find themselves in government held areas of the city were being detained by military forces and taken to “warehouses that look more like internment camps.” That account detailing what happened on Monday comes from Abdullah Othman, who leads the Consultative Council in the Levant Front, one of the main rebel groups fighting Assad’s soldiers in Aleppo.
Things became even more grim on Tuesday. Per The Daily Beast, according to Othman and other reports amid the chaos unfolding in the besieged city, sexual violence has been so prevalent it’s forcing women into an unthinkable choice.
“This morning 20 women committed suicide in order not to be raped,” Othman said. According to NBC News, suicide is quickly becoming a preference to a violent death or capture by Assad’s troops.
Charles Lister, a Syria expert and senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, told NBC News that “husbands and wives [were] taking each other’s lives in family suicides.” Meanwhile, Assad’s forces have nearly taken control of the entire city and plans for a cease-fire to allow for the evacuation of remaining civilians were under way Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.
