Citat:
The US administration has called the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria morally repugnant and a red line. However, recently declassified CIA files show that the US government was complicit in one of the worst chemical attacks in history.
In 1988, US intelligence saw satellite photos which suggested that Iranian forces were poised to take Basra. The capture of this city would have caused the collapse of the Iraqi army
Citat:
This information was passed to President Reagan, who wrote a note in one of the briefing papers saying an Iranian victory was unacceptable.
The satellite photos were given to Saddam as well as instructions on the best way and time to deliver chemical weapon-armed missiles. On the day Saddam was given this information 1,500 Iraqi missiles reigned down on Iranian positions.
Citat:
They were armed with nerve gas, mustard gas and anthrax. These weapons were supplied by the West and were used as a pretext for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Iranian diplomats went to the UN and urged them to investigate, but the UN declined citing lack of evidence – evidence Reagan had, but declined to share as it would have shown US complicity. Later in 1988, Saddam used poisoned gas on the Kurds, killing some 5,000 people. The US government maintained this attack was committed by Iran well into the 1990s.
