The Empire Lobbies Back
As I had predicted, I am hearing the bank lobby is panicking about stablecoins and specifically the ability to pay any form of rewards or interest.
So for my friends on the Democratic side, let me simplify what you are hearing:
The banks want you to protect their cartel so they can keep screwing your voters. Especially younger voters (you know, the ones that just swung hard to the right because you supported the pro-banker bonus / anti-crypto army over them).
Why?
To use an example from before, the current model of many banks (and I will say there are some banks that are far better than this, and because those know how to compete and operate, they will be fine) is:
1 - take deposits
2 - pay depositors zero
3 - make risky loans to commercial real estate billionaires
4 - pay themselves huge bonuses
5 - when it goes wrong, shrug, say "banking is risky", keep your huge bonuses, and stick the depositors with the losses
First of all, before I say anything else about stablecoins, reread that. Twice. Then please ask yourself if you are a Dem who cares about consumer protection, what is even a single coherent reason to protect that!? There isn't one. It's insane. The only people who benefit are billionaires and bank executives.
So what is the bank lobby saying? They are saying if stablecoins pay interest, banks will be "harmed", by which if you understand what I wrote, you understand that means bank executive's bonuses.
This is total nonsense for multiple reasons:
1 - see above
2 - they face this competition today, right now, from $6T+ of government money market funds and it did not cause the world to end
3 - their pleading of "oh think of the common man" is contradicted by only 10-20pct of all bank balance sheets being mortgages, and every year more of that exposure moving off their balance sheet and into capital markets
This is naked pandering for cartel protection. If you fall for this, you deserve to lose your seat. It's embarrassing and a genuine betrayal of America and your voters.
But if none of that persuades you, let me give you the following tool:
Agree to ban interest on stablecoins but in return for banks to be eligible for FDIC insurance they must either pay fed funds to all depositors or total compensation at the bank and any other corporate family entities is capped at 3x the median income in America.
You will find the responses very revealing. After all, to get that restriction they want the only thing they have to give up is their giant bonuses... and yet they will freak out.
So don't get fooled, and don't screw your voters for rich extractive bankers. The good ones can compete and will be fine (in fact will launch their own stablecoins). I'm not worried about JP Morgan here. But the bad ones screwing consumers? Why would you side with them and expect young voters to come back?
