Russian Volunteer Contract
The Russian military has implemented a contract system for volunteers to participate in the war in Ukraine, offering substantial financial incentives to attract individuals. The contract typically includes a one-time signing bonus, monthly pay, and additional benefits. For example, the federal government provides a one-time payment of 400,000 rubles ($4,651) to volunteers who sign a contract with the army, and regional authorities are encouraged to match this amount.
In some regions, such as Belgorod, the total sign-on package can reach up to 2.6 million rubles ($31,000).
The contract also includes monthly pay, which starts at 210,000 rubles or more, significantly higher than the average wage in Russia.
Additionally, volunteers may receive bonuses for participating in offensives or destroying enemy equipment.
The contract is typically for a period of one year or more, and volunteers are expected to serve on the front lines.
The contract system has been part of a broader strategy to replenish Russia's military ranks, as the country has faced significant losses on the front lines. Despite the risks, the financial incentives have proven effective in attracting volunteers, with over 450,000 people signing contracts for military service in 2024 alone.
However, the effectiveness of this system is being tested as the war continues and the number of volunteers willing to join the front decreases.
