Är det relevant att jämföra med svarta börsen bakom järnridån i planekonomin för 30 år sedan? Min morbror bytte visserligen till sig en rysk kikare i toppklass för ett par paket tuggumi i Leningrad på 80-talet, men då var tuggummi omöjligt att få tag i i öst, en lyxvara och statussymbol som uppkomlingar var beredda att betala vad som helst för. Tvivlar på att det är så idag, Rumänien etc är ju faktiskt med i EU och borde kunna importera eller tillverka tuggummi om det var eftertraktat. Tror mer på teorin om att tuggummina ska återförsäljas i halvskumma kiosker och videobutiker.
Jag delar din skepsis och tror att det är en slags urban myt att tuggummi är ett betalningsmedel i Rumänien. Förklaringarna i artiklarna är ju inte särskilt väl underbyggda:

Tuggummi används inte som valuta i ordets riktiga mening utan som ett slags surrogat för småmynt när de är slut. Gissningsvis är det som användaren ovan hävdar, d.v.s. att tuggummi säljs till skumma butiksägare. Att just tuggummi är stöldbegärligt handlar nog om att de är lättillgängliga och har förhållandevis högt värde i förhållande till sin storlek.
