"Back in 218 BC, during the Second Punic War, in one of the most celebrated achievements of any military force in ancient warfare, Hannibal famously managed to lead his Carthaginian army, complete with elephants, over the Alps and into Italy to take the war directly to the Roman Republic, bypassing Roman land garrisons and naval dominance.
Until now Hannibal’s route has been hotly disputed with different ski resorts claiming he went past them. The route covered by the Milky Way lift pass between Montgenevre in France and Sauze d’Oulx and Sestriere in Italy is one of the claimants.
However, in dramatic news this morning, the resort of La Rosière has found conclusive evidence that Hannibal actually passed by them and across the mountains to La Thuile in Italy via the 2188m high Col du Petit Saint-Bernard – now one of the world’s great ski areas. "
“During avalanche training, rescue dog Mistral behaved strangely and encouraged his owner to dig with him,” a resort spokesperson explained.

En armé runt 20 - 30 000 man med Kavalleri och Elefanter kräver stor yta för att slå läger i Alppassen.. Vilka Alppass kunde vara aktuella?
Col du Montgenevre, between Briancon in France and Susa in Italy, is the only pass in this area which would fit the description of all 5 key points.

"Hannibal’s Route
Col du Montgenevre is the most likely route because according to Hannibal’s own account of his passing, there are 5 key physical traits that the pass would have had:
The pass has to offer sufficient room to build a camp for at least 20,000 soldiers, 6,000 cavalry and twenty-seven elephants
The defile should begin within 15 to 30 kilometers from the summit, because Hannibal’s soldiers started to climb down on the day they left the camp on the summit;
The road to Italy must be in a northerly direction: the soldiers encountered snows of the previous year when they were descending;
The first part of the descent has to be narrow and steep;
After this, the descent has to be less steep for about 50 kilometers, because it took Hannibal’s men three days to reach the plain; "

Alternativt bergspass i närheten , Col de la Traversette, där större mängder hästspillning från långt bak i tiden hittats. Dock är vägens branthet (30%) föga trolig för en armé med "30,000 soldiers, 9,000 cavalry and a herd of elephants"
"Soil containing traces of horse manure has been carbon dated to 218BC, the time of Hannibal’s crossing, and shows that he took the Col de la Traversette, a narrow bridle path 9,500ft above sea level that links the Guil Valley in France with the Po Valley in Italy.
Previous speculation that he took this direct route had been discounted because of its sheer difficulty, with gradients as steep as 1:3."
