What he likes best is dry sex. In parts of sub-Saharan Africa, to please men, women sit in basins of bleach or saltwater or stuff astringent herbs, tobacco or fertilizer inside their vagina. The tissue of the lining swells up and natural lubricants dry out. The resulting dry sex is painful and dangerous for women. The drying agents suppress natural bacteria, and friction easily lacerates the tender walls of the vagina. Dry sex increases the risk of HIV infection for women, already two times as likely as men to contract the virus from a single encounter.

Chikoka knows his predilection for commercial sex spreads AIDS; he knows his promiscuity could carry the disease home to his wife; he knows people die if they get it. "Yes, HIV is terrible, madam," he says as he crooks a finger toward the businesswoman whose favors he will enjoy that night. "But, madam, sex is natural. Sex is not like beer or smoking. You can stop them. But unless you castrate the men, you can't stop sex — and then we all die anyway."

Millions of men share Chikoka's sexually active lifestyle, fostered by the region's dependence on migrant labor. Men desperate to earn a few dollars leave their women at hardscrabble rural homesteads to go where the work is: the mines, the cities, the road. They're housed together in isolated males-only hostels but have easy access to prostitutes or a "town wife" with whom they soon pick up a second family and an ordinary std and HIV.

JACK ROLLING gangs have long terrorised South Africa’s violent black townships where rape is a daily reality for millions of women.

At the height of jack rolling in the turbulent 1990s, raiding parties would take women and young girls off at gunpoint, even from school playgrounds, or grab them from a bus stop.

They would be kept prisoner in a house or hostel while the men drank beer, played cards, or watched television, occasionally breaking off to rape the victim. The ordeal could last several days.

Most of the rapists regarded it as a leisure activity or “just a bit of a game”, according to a recent study of male attitudes towards women. Boys as young as 15 said that they thought jack rolling was cool.

WITH their milky white skin, wispy hair and haunting, pale eyes, they are called "the living ghosts" by locals.

And the vulnerable albinos of Tanzania in East Africa have more than insults to fear.

They are being hunted down and hacked to death to satisfy a growing demand for their body parts and blood to use in black magic.

It is the stuff of nightmares.

In the Mwanga district, near Mount Kilimanjaro, a baby girl was dressed in black by her mother and left alone in the family hut.

A group of men cut off the pale girl's legs, slit her throat, poured the blood into a pot and drank it.

In another sickening case a man was caught trying to enter the Democratic Republic of Congo with an albino child's HEAD in his luggage.

He said a businessman in the country had offered to pay generously for the trophy, depending on the weight of the head.
