Hydra is a registered association which for the last twenty years has provided advice services to prostitutes in Berlin, Germany. As a "meeting place" Hydra has, in its long history, been witness to both the dark and light sides of this profession. In this article they chose to explore the more positive aspects of this controversial occupation.

There can be few occupations as easily accessible to any woman who wants to join. To find work as a prostitute you don't have to provide certificates of your qualifications or go through lengthy selection interviews or bureaucratic procedures. All you have to do is buy a newspaper, go through the ad pages, make a phone call and drop by the place of work; there you'll be given information about shifts, prices and deductions and you nearly always come out with a new job. After the first three days you might find that you don't like your place of work much, so you just go out and look for another. It's all very simple.

Hot money

The money goes directly into the prostitute's pocket, not like a monthly salary. Let's suppose a woman arrives at her place of work with five marks in her pocket; it's perfectly possible that at the end of the day she may leave with two hundred, three hundred or even five hundred marks. So, after earning the first hundred marks, she can afford to buy herself a more expensive meal. And if she earns even more, she can buy herself something pretty at the end of the day. Money lifts one's spirits and increases one's disposition to do something in exchange. Money is capable of arousing feelings of happiness that can be made use of in sex work, or - as they say on the job - money's a turn-on.

Prostitutes are paid because they are desirable. In a consumer society, desirability is seen as something to strive for. Prostitution is a job that reaffirms women's capacity to make men happy, to satisfy them, which in turn raises the women's self-esteem.

Leaving the orgasm for last

People who expose their body as part of their job have reason enough to take good care of it. This goes for models and dancers, but also for prostitutes. These women are careful of what they eat, treat their skin with oils and creams, go to the hairdresser and the beauty salon, to the gym and the solarium. People who invest a lot in their bodies are proud of them and show them willingly. These positive vibes are noticeable to all.

However, prostitutes not only care for their bodies, they also get to know them very well, since they have to learn how to conserve their sexual energy. If a prostitute wants to have an orgasm, it is better if she has it with her last client. This does not mean that she cannot enjoy herself before then. In this sense there are certain parallels with the tantric principles for achieving full sexuality: the tantra recommends postponing orgasms for as long as possible. Moreover, being able to experience sexual pleasure in the brothel frees a woman from having to search the discos for a one night stand.

The discreet charm of anonymity

When a woman becomes a prostitute, she becomes a sex object. The client requires her to participate in his sexual desires and fantasies, hoping that she will play them out with him. These desires and fantasies may coincide with those of the prostitute, allowing her to live her femininity and desire to the full, beneath the veil of anonymity. She does not have to feel ashamed, since she is not the one who has expressed these desires. Similarly, the man need not feel ashamed either, as long as he enjoys the anonymity of the brothel. On this basis, two people who are not tied by the restraints of morality and respectability can come together to establish a sincere channel of communication of a different kind, which can provide the basis for having good sex.

A never-ending adventure

Given its intrinsic nature, prostitution offers a greater degree of adventure than other professions. It involves a lot of sex with strange men. The question arises repeatedly: which man will choose me, what will he want, what will he be like? When a prostitute goes to work she does not know whether she will have pleasant clients or difficult ones, or even good-looking ones; whether they will be generous, or whether the sex will be good and exciting. A hairdresser may ask herself similar questions, as she does not know whether her clients will be pleasant, or how many clients she will have during the working day. However, in this case, these questions do not have the same quota of excitement, because haircutting does not have such a direct psychological impact on the person as sex services do. The adventure of prostitution can be compared to the adventure of hitchhiking: in the latter situation you also do not know whom you will meet, or whether the encounter will be brief, agreeable or not; given the enclosed space of a car, it is possible for the situation to acquire the same intensity as an encounter in a brothel.

Day and night

Being a prostitute means not being alone. A sex worker is permanently in contact with other people: the women who are her co-workers and the men with whom she earns her money. It is a job that requires sensitivity and allows one to gain a knowledge of human nature to a degree that is hard to find in other professions. This is partly because the men with whom these women have encounters are more honest, being protected by the anonymity of the brothel, and partly because of the intimacy that accompanies any sexual act, regardless of how long the participants have known each other.

Prostitution may take place during the day - between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. - but also at night. Night workers enjoy the nightlife and are usually in contact with alcohol. Although this drug has a series of negative properties, it also increases relaxation and heightens perception. Well-dressed men and a slight intoxication create an atmosphere similar to that of a disco: in both situations the idea is to flirt, be admired, look and be seen.

From massage to a golden shower

Prostitution enables one to learn a lot about sexuality - on a practical, not a theoretical, level. With time, a woman who works as a prostitute will have a much clearer idea about men's desires than a woman whose sexual relations with men are limited to a private context. At the brothel men express their desires with greater liberty, as the other person does not know who they are or where they live. As a result, they have fewer inhibitions about expressing their eroticism verbally, trying out new sexual techniques and exotic massages, or even a golden shower.

In this article, we have consciously chosen to look exclusively at the positive aspects of prostitution, and not mention its dark side. However, it should not be forgotten that being a prostitute means living on the edge. In other words, only those women who know the limits and respect them will be able to enjoy the positive aspects of prostitution. Not all prostitutes have this capacity and they quickly discover the dark side of their profession. For this reason, Hydra offers initial advice, aimed at warning women about the dangers and explaining all the risks involved.

Hydra registered association (Hydra e.V.) operates as a meeting place and advice centre for prostitutes in Berlin, Germany. Over the past twenty years the association has campaigned for prostitution to be given the same legal recognition as other occupations.
