It’s clear Trump wants to keep this to a moment rather than something that derails the peace talks.
We are told – although the White House has offered no confirmation at this point – that Trump has spoken to Netanyahu in the last couple of hours. We know they had a conversation last Monday. We know that didn’t go well. Trump himself confessed that he swore at Netanyahu about his operation in Lebanon, and told him he had to rein that in.
It appears that the phone call that happened in the last couple of hours certainly followed that pattern. He told Netanyahu that both sides had had their fun in the words that he used, that the Iranians had had a strike, the Israelis had had a strike, and now, they had to stop it, because he sees this as a threat to a potential peace deal.
And he’s spoken to a number of journalists and said that a peace deal with the Iranians could happen next Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday – the next three days.
So it’s clear that Trump is trying to rein Netanyahu in. The problem Netanyahu’s got, he has opposition politicians, like Naftali Bennett, saying that if Netanyahu does what Trump asks him, then it’s clear that Israel is no longer a sovereign state.
And Netanyahu will do what Trump wants. Remember, Trump is much more popular in Israel than Netanyahu, and Netanyahu needs that level of support, that connection with the White House, to ensure electoral success in what is likely to be a very tough-fought election later this year.
