2. Investigate toxins in our food supply and restrict/ban those that are known to cause diseases in animals and humans.
The FDA allows around 4,000 chemicals in the American food supply, including known cancer-causing substances. By some reports, that number is up to 10,000. The U.S. allows 72 pesticides that Europe bans, and high levels of toxic pesticides are found in 93% of Americans' blood/urine samples. The EU bans thousands of the more than 80,000 chemicals that the US allows in food, agriculture, water, skincare, and other products. We should immediately investigate these standards with unbiased scientists. We also need to modernize the Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) FDA designation to take into account the cumulative health effects of the multiple chemicals that are in our food and products, rather than evaluating them in isolation.
Men som sagt, jag håller med Shanahan om Means syskonen. Jag känner lågt förtroende om henne.
lite OT men gällande din kommentar om att Kennedy inte gör något åt ingredienserna så stämmer inte det. De är i full gång med det.
What stronger FDA oversight could look like
One clear way to strengthen FDA oversight of additives would be to close the GRAS loophole so that all new ingredients undergo mandatory FDA review before companies start using them.
The agency could try to do this on its own, but experts told STAT the FDA would likely seek help from Congress, especially after this past summer’s Supreme Court decision weakening agency authority. There are certainly members of Congress who’ve been outspoken on the need to fix GRAS: In addition to last year’s legislation from Sen. DeLauro, a group of Democratic senators including Cory Booker, Edward Markey, Elizabeth Warren, and Richard Blumenthal sponsored a similar bill in 2023.
But lawmaking takes time. The new administration might see quicker results through a legal show of force. The FDA could scare companies into complying with voluntary GRAS requirements by suing one or two of them over ingredients the agency doesn’t view as safe. Before the FDA can do that, though, it needs to better understand the safety of chemicals already in the food supply.
