Veterans of war: a new wave of brutal crimes sweeps Russia
Each month, Russia sees a growing number of crimes committed by participants of the war against Ukraine.
Combat veterans, armed and accustomed to impunity, are increasingly appearing in criminal reports — most often for murder and rape.
📌 Rape on a train
58-year-old Vladimir Sharafutdinov from Khakassia was accused of raping an 18-year-old student on the Moscow–Abakan train. The man attacked her in the carriage restroom despite her screams for help. After questioning, the “veteran of the special military operation” was released. He claimed the act was “consensual.”
📌 Child killer avoids life sentence
49-year-old lawyer Alexander Gook from Yekaterinburg, who murdered a 42-year-old woman and her six-year-old son, went to war to avoid trial. He killed the boy and threw his body in the trash, then dismembered the mother. After the horrific crime, the killer joined the front.
📌 Drunk driving tragedy
In Revda near Yekaterinburg, 37-year-old war participant Mikhail Slobodyan ran over and killed two sisters, aged seven and nine. A third girl was hospitalized in critical condition. His blood tests showed alcohol and drugs. In court, Slobodyan said his “driver’s license burned in Ukraine” and showed his Suvorov medal.
📌 Murderers at war and home
Many convicted criminals, including murderers, were freed to fight in the war. One man from Ivanovo region, sentenced to 20 years for torturing and killing his wife, was later killed in Ukraine. He had stabbed his wife over 20 times with a fork and kitchen knives, urinated on her, and poured vinegar on her face.
Meanwhile, Russia has seen nearly a twofold increase in convictions for hooliganism. Lawyers and psychologists link the spike to the return of war veterans, Mozhem Ob’yasnit reports.
