Rapping Russian army deserters Slavik and Dimon are back with a new rap song, telling the story of how they met on the battlefield after being accidentally shelled by their own side and seeing their commanders "stupidly lay down groups in piles of corpses".
Slavik and Dimon – real names Vyacheslav Trutnev and Dmitry Ostrovsky – deserted after, they say, their company commander got drunk and ordered them to carry out a suicidal assault through minefields at night.
The two men are convict soldiers, recruited from penal colonies. They say their commanders have treated them atrociously and punish those who survive after carrying out missions, on the assumption that if they are still alive they have disobeyed orders.
Russian commanders are said to expect only 2% of convict soldiers to survive assaults, and are punishing soldiers who do survive, on the assumption that if they are still alive, it shows that they have disobeyed their orders.
