Edit:
Russia Today (RT) pages will be banned on Facebook and Instagram, according to Reuters, citing Meta’s decision.
‘After careful consideration, we have expanded our measures against Russian state media. RT and other Russian state media outlets will be banned from our apps worldwide. These networks have used deceptive tactics to carry out covert influence operations,’ the statement explained.
The ban will take effect in the coming days.
Earlier this month, U.S. authorities filed money-laundering charges against two RT employees, accusing them of hiring a U.S. company to create online content aimed at influencing the 2024 election.
Meta owns Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, and Facebook.
On September 13, the United States imposed sanctions against the Russia Today media group and its CEO, Dmitry Kiselyov. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stated that RT had participated in global disinformation campaigns and operated under the guidance of Russian intelligence. One of RT’s projects is a crowdfunding network raising money for the Russian army.
