Ukraine is rapidly advancing in the creation of military drones equipped with artificial intelligence (AI), as reported by Reuters. Various Ukrainian startups are developing AI systems designed to manage fleets of drones, with the aim of deploying these advanced UAVs along the front lines to counteract Russian jamming efforts and enable larger drone operations.
The AI drone development in Ukraine focuses on three main areas: visual systems for target identification and guidance, terrain mapping for navigation, and complex programs that facilitate the operation of interconnected drone swarms. One notable company in this sector is Swarmer, which is developing software to network drones, allowing instantaneous group decision-making with minimal human intervention. Their system, Styx, integrates reconnaissance and attack drones both in the air and on the ground, enabling autonomous action and predictive behavior within the swarm.
While AI-driven drones offer significant advantages, experts like Samuel Bendett from the Center for a New American Security caution that human oversight is still necessary to prevent targeting errors. Ethical concerns also arise regarding autonomous weapons systems, which could potentially violate international humanitarian law and lower the threshold for engaging in warfare, as highlighted in a 2020 European Parliament research paper.
Despite these concerns, AI is already being utilized in some long-range strikes by Ukrainian drones, targeting military facilities and oil refineries deep within Russian territory. These operations involve drones that fly to their targets while others focus on disabling or distracting air defenses en route, employing AI under human supervision to identify targets and threats and plan routes.
Experts predict that the ongoing advancements in AI software will result in relatively low-cost drones, further enhancing Ukraine's military capabilities.
