Then disaster struck. On a family holiday to Cornwall in 2021, he went out on a boat with his wife, Dr Clare Bailey — also a Daily Mail columnist — and decided to swim back to shore. The chilly Atlantic waters sent his nervous system into shock.

'I thought, I'm going to beat Clare back to shore,' he recalled last year. 'The next thing I know, I'm in casualty. Apparently I've swum back, Clare has caught up, but I was looking really vacant and I clearly had no idea who she is or who I am or where I am. Though I kept on repeating: 'I have a wife and four children.'

'I got a thorough examination and the consultant said: 'You have something called transient global amnesia, which is relatively rare — but it's brought on by swimming in cold water.'

'It's caused by a change in blood pressure and blood flow to the brain. My memory banks were entirely wiped for about two or three hours and then gradually came back.'

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is acute onset anterograde amnesia that is temporary and usually occurs in middle-aged and older individuals. It is often precipitated by particularly strenuous activity, high-stress events, or coitus, but it can be seen with migraines. Studies have been inconclusive as to whether there are risk factors for the development of transient global amnesia, though some have suggested an association with a history of prior heart disease, migraine, or hyperlipidemia. Patients often present with repetitive questioning and total anterograde memory loss that resolves within 24 hours. While there may be disorientation with respect to other people and location, the patients do not lose self-awareness.

The expert explained what an 800-calorie day would look like, saying: "For breakfast, I've got eggs and asparagus - the book has a range of recipes, but I'm a huge fan of eggs, eggs fill you up.

"You can have scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, however you want them. Sometimes I have eggs with ham or a bit of salmon. No toast I'm afraid, plenty of tea and coffee, plenty of fluid. I would encourage anyone doing a low-calorie diet to drink lots and lots of fluid - because you're going to dry out."
