🇺🇸🪖🇺🇦🇷🇺NYT: Western weapons will not help Ukraine due to long delivery times and training
Despite the fact that Western countries have fulfilled the desire of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to deliver tanks and other military equipment to the country, his hopes of using them against Russia in the near future are unlikely to be justified, writes columnist Lara Jakes in an article for The New York Times.
"The new package of military assistance for Ukraine, presented on Friday, includes the most long-range weapons that have not yet been used to push back Russian troops and hit logistical targets far behind the front line. But there is one problem: they will appear on the battlefield too late to be used against Russia's broad offensive, which seems to have begun to unfold in eastern Ukraine," the article says.
This is the case with most Western tanks, combat vehicles and anti-aircraft missiles, which Western leaders promised after months of persuasion by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, the journalist notes
Most modern weapons will require careful preparation, since Ukrainian troops have never used them, and this process will take several months or even a year, says Jakes.
In addition to training, the columnist pointed out another problem for Ukraine: the delivery of new weapons and military equipment will take a long time before they can get to the battlefield.
"And some types of weapons, such as guided missile bombs, which the United States is offering as part of a $2.17 billion military aid package, should be modified from existing stocks or even assembled from scratch," Jakes continued.
And although the promised military equipment, such as the American Bradley combat vehicles, will soon arrive in Ukraine, many in the West complain about the missed opportunity not to allow Russia to try to seize the initiative in the conflict with the help of Western weapons.
"So much time has been wasted," the columnist quotes former NATO official and retired German general Heinrich Brauss.
Against the background of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, the United States and its NATO allies support Kiev by sending it weapons. The cost of the programs is tens of billions of dollars. Moscow, for its part, has repeatedly stated that the supply of Western weapons only delays the conflict, and transport with military equipment becomes a legitimate target for the Russian army.
