First line of Ukrainian defenses of Avdeyevka (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avdiivka) is broken, Mash Donbass telegram announced, DPR troops are occupying the trenches and fortifications. Avdeeyevka is a the industrial suburb of Donetsk that was being prepared by Ukrainian army to withstand frontal attacks during 8 years. From there, Donetsk residential quarters are shelled regularly causing heavy civilian death toll and property damage in Donetsk.
Avdeyevka is extremely hard to take, if assaulted frontally. Some experts consider that bombardment of Avdeyevka could trigger an ecologic disaster, since Avdeyevka coke and chemical plant (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avdiivka_Coke_Plant) is located there. From the other hand, frontal assault may be very costly in terms of potential losses the attacking side may sustain, breaking deeply layered defense lines.
Until now it was expected that Avdeyevka, despite heavy civilian life losses in Donetsk, would be taken after the fall of Kramatorsk and Slaviansk, from the rear. Apparently, the sustained savagery of the Ukrainian shelling, made the the command change that sad, but militarily explainable decision.
