Karl Marx gjorde research inför skrivandet av
Das Kapital på British Librarys läsesal (nuvarande British Museum).
Gorbatjov besökte London 1984, han träffade Margaret Thatcher och gjorde ett besök på British Museum läsesal. Han var vid tillfället allmänt ansedd av kremlologer som sovjetisk tronföljare (Konstantin Tjernenko, som Gorbatjov inom kort skulle komma att efterträda, började röka vid 9 års ålder och hade vid tiden för Gorbatjovs besök i Storbritannien hälsa likt en alkoholiserad sibirisk zombie).
