Han hade dessutom träffat de båda svenskorna året innan i Spanien. Därför förhördes han, men nekade till att ha något att göra med morden på Ann Jönsson och Gun Johannesson.
Koos Hertogs nekade för övrigt till allt, men dömdes främst på teknisk bevisning till livstids fängelse. Det straffet avtjänar han fortfarande. I mitten av 1990-talet erkände han de tre morden han dömts för. Belgisk polis förhörde honom då på nytt om morden på svenskorna, men Hertogs fortsatte neka.
