Ilya Sutskever FRS (Hebrew: איליה סוצקבר; Russian: Илья Суцкевер; born 1985/86)[4] is a Russian-born Israeli-Canadian computer scientist working in machine learning,[1] who co-founded and serves as Chief Scientist of OpenAI.[7]
He has made several major contributions to the field of deep learning. He is the co-inventor, with Alex Krizhevsky and Geoffrey Hinton, of AlexNet, a convolutional neural network.[8] Sutskever is also one of the many co-authors of the AlphaGo paper.[9]
Early life and education
Sutskever was born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, then called "Gorky", at the time part of the Soviet Union, and at age 5 immigrated with his family to Israel.[10] He spent his formative years in Jerusalem.[11]
Sutskever attended the Open University of Israel between 2000 and 2002[12] before moving with his family to Canada and transferred to the University of Toronto, where he then obtained his BSc (2005) in mathematics[12][13][6][14] and his MSc[15][13] and PhD[3][16][17] in computer science under the supervision of Geoffrey Hinton.[2]
In 2012, he built AlexNet in collaboration with Hinton and Alex Krizhevsky. To support the computing demands of AlexNet, he bought many GTX 580 GPUs online.[18]

Mira Murati (born 1988) is an Albanian[1] engineer and business executive. She joined OpenAI in 2018, serving as the CTO of the company, and as of 17 November 2023, is the interim Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI, replacing Sam Altman.[2][3]
Early life and education
Murati was born in 1988[4] in Vlorë, Albania, to Albanian parents.[5] At the age of 16, she left Albania to attend Pearson College UWC (United World College) on Vancouver Island, Canada, from which she graduated with an International Baccalaureate diploma in 2007.[5]
For her undergraduate education, Murati attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, on a Davis-UWC Scholarship; while there she was selected for the school's five year, dual degree program in engineering with Dartmouth College.[6] In 2012, she graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from Dartmouth and a Bachelor of Arts from Colby.[7][8][9]
Career
Murati started her career as an intern at Goldman Sachs in 2011, and worked at Zodiac Aerospace from 2012 to 2013. She spent three years at Tesla as a senior product manager of Model X before joining Leap Motion.[7][10][11]
She then joined OpenAI in 2018, later becoming its chief technology officer, leading the company's work on ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Codex[10][12] and overseeing the company's research, product and safety teams.[13]
On November 17, 2023, Murati took over as interim chief executive officer of OpenAI, following the abrupt removal of Sam Altman.[2][14][15]
She is an advocate for the regulation of AI,[7][16] arguing that governments should play a greater role "in aligning on some basic safety standards for deployment of these models."[13]
